Colleagues I have attached a draft agenda for the IIE 2005 Doctoral Colloquium. My thanks to all of you who volunteered to assist, particularly those of you pulling double duty with the New Faculty Colloquium and/or repeat duty from last year, and to Mike, John, and Jose for their collaboration. Jose has done the heavy lifting with respect to the joint New Faculty/Doctoral sessions in our respective agendas. Presenters, let me know if these times suit you. Candace Yano of UC Berkeley was kind enough to offer to organize a session, and I thought her interest in doing one on publishing made excellent sense. She and I have not had a chance to close the loop yet, so consider that session tentative. Also, I still have room for a few additional individual contributions. Nominations are beginning to trickle in. I have also attached the call for student nominations that Mike circulated previously to the faculty list, the text of which appears below: Call for Nominations: 4th Annual IIE Doctoral Colloquium Saturday, May 14, 2005 Nominations Due from Department Chairs January 21, 2005 The Council of Industrial Engineering Academic Department Heads (CIEADH) and the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) requests nominations for the 4th Annual Doctoral Colloquium to be held Saturday, May 14, 2005, preceding the annual IIE conference. This all-day event is designed for doctoral candidates expecting to graduate by spring of 2006. Panels of experts will lead discussions on various topics of interest, including the job search, life in academia and industry, the tenure process, teaching, research and professional service. Students will also present their dissertation research in a poster session on the following Sunday. Nominations must be made by department chairs. To nominate students, please send: 1. Statement from the chair indicating names of students, their Ph.D. advisors, their expected dates of graduation, and their email addresses (as part of an email message). 2. One attached file (PDF or MS word) for each nominee, including current vita and brief description of research topic (e.g., a 1-page dissertation abstract). Please use the following naming convention for files: 3-letter school name abbreviation/last name. For example: uschall.doc. (you may select your own school abbreviation). 3. If student is interested in the poster session, a title and abstract. Please submit as separate attachment with the naming convention: 3-letter school name abbreviation/last name/poster. For example uschallposter.doc. Departments should limit nominations to a maximum of three students, as space is limited. Please email your nomination to: <mailto:glum@usc.edu> glum@usc.edu with the subject line "Doctoral Colloquium Nomination". Nominations must be received by Friday, January 21, 2005. Nominees will be notified (accept or reject) by Friday, February 25, 2005 to ensure enough time to make travel arrangements. Meals will be provided (continental breakfast, lunch and dinner) on May 14. All other expenses incurred are to be covered by either the nominee or their department. Guests may attend dinner on May 14 for an additional fee. Please note that acceptance of an invitation to attend the colloquium does not gain entrance to the IIE Annual Conference. While colloquium attendees are invited to attend the conference, they must register separately for that event.
