Anton was asking for research in intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.    Check  the papers suggested
by Joseph E. Gawel in the ERIC article, Herzberg's theory of motivation and Maslow's hierarchy of
need (as they apply to teachers, and possibly other service professionals)  [
http://ericae.net/pare/getvn.asp?v=5&n=11 ].    Gawel suggests that the models are either out of
date or what applies to work in business may not fit some professions.
