UNDERSTANDING YOUR ORGANISATION AS A SYSTEM:
The Starting Place for Effective Change
John Seddon
Tuesday, 29 February 2000, 13.30 for 14.00
Royal Mail Conference Centre, Phoenix Place, London WC1
(Nearest tube: Farringdon or Chancery Lane)
----------------------------------------------------------------
Dr Deming taught that organisations should be managed as systems, not
functional
hierarchies. What does this mean? How is systems thinking different from
`command
and control' thinking?
In this, our first meeting of the 21st Century, John Seddon will introduce
practical,
easy-to-understand and readily applicable ideas that have immense power for
managing change and improvement. En route, he will probably slay a few holy
cows
of the quality movement.
The Speaker
John Seddon is an occupational psychologist, author and managing director of
Vanguard Consulting. His interest in quality began in the mid-1980s when he
was
asked to research programmes of change that had failed. Today, he describes
his work
as a combination of systems thinking - how the work works - and
intervention theory -
how to change it. John is well known for his controversial views on ISO
9000: check
out Vanguard's website at www.vanguardconsult.co.uk. He could never be
described
as short on ideas and big on humility. Expect a mixture of entertainment,
education
and controversy.
