RE: den.list-d Digest V00 #17
Tom,
Your post flatters me, but others started the transformation. I'm fortunate
enough to have studied systems and psychology at length and was introduced
to analytical/variation thinking through Deming and Wheeler at the close of
my doctorate. It was like sailing alone on the ocean, who to turn to when a
new paradigm changes what is taught in Academia. Facing a committee of PhD's
trained in enumerative statistics was armpit sweating to say the least.
Working with a colleague of mine, we are researching a human systems
measurement to be translated into the business world via a "process behavior
chart" (control chart). The human systems approach to behavior started in
the 50's but still lives even though the post modernism mindset is trying to
displace systems. Thus a war has begun between the two. What they don't know
is that through understanding the voice of the human process and the voice
of the humans (their desires, expectations, perceptions etc.) can be
understood through analytical statistics. When a family's human process is
functional but their expectations are out of sink with their measurements
(process limits) then there is still trouble, just like when a product does
not meet the specs of a customer, things are off target. Hopefully, our
research will lead to the business world gaining insight into human
interaction (processes) and improving behavior by modifying dynamics. Deming
talks to this as "we" should all win once we see what it takes to set up the
win-win situation. Families and business folks all have interaction
processes, they are one in the same, and humans in a family are the same
humans in a business organization. The news is that we spend as much time,
if not more, time in the business world interacting than in a family. When
business psychologist wake up to this, there will be a scramble to find
those with profound knowledge (i.e. Deming disciples).
To answer your question on my writings: None have been accepted by the
mental health professional journals. We have a proposal to present at the
American Association of Marriage and Family Therapist annual conference. We
are looking for a business organization (one that would comprehend the human
systems approach) to collaborate with on our research/measurment.
