David,
I do, indeed, work in a non-Deming organisation that chases the "holy grail"
of ISO 9001 and proclaims itself a "quality company" !
I find two things vital to survival:
1. At least 1 very senior manager who understands Deming and support active
development of our ideas;
2. An understanding of "common cause" and "special cause" variation. I think
Rudyard Kipling had WED and the theory of variation in mind when he wrote
"If you can keep your head when all around you are losing theirs; You are
indeed a Man, my son" (Perhaps a little paraphrased, but you get my drift).
The waste of time and effort expended chasing common cause variation on a
daily basis, is indeed staggering to behold !
