Dear David,

Even if the companies for which we work don't practice Dr. Deming's
principles, we can still apply them by charting key operating
characteristics to determine if 'improvement trends' and their counterparts
are truly improving or deteriorating or if it is just random, common-cause
variation. That way, we will at least be able to make sound career decisions
for ourselves. Also, we may be able to make 'amazing' predictions based on
the data, thereby convincing management that there is something to this
theory of variation.

We may not be able to come up with a 100% fix, but we can always move the
process in a positive direction, even if only a little at a time.
