Re: den.list-d Digest V00 #30

Baldrige 'success' does not mean perfection. Sure, a few - endlessly
recycled - past winners have had problems. Most in the early days of the
award scheme, most in circumstances that have very little to do with their
Baldrige success.

That's not the point though. The 'winners' are the tip of an iceberg that
accounts, for example, for two thirds of the dollar value of the US economy.
Right now, in the US and all around the world, thousands of Baldrige teams
are assembling applications. Only a few will ever enter formal award
schemes. The great majority are using the criteria to drive internal
improvement, employing every possible package of tools and techniques.

Often, they don't even use the B word (IBM Rochester, Raytheon - both past
winners), but their continuous improvement architecture is pure Baldrige.

To get an appreciation of how using the Baldrige approach can transform a
struggling, even a failing, business (with strategic national defence
significance), look at the Boeing Airlift and Tanker case study on my web
site.
