Re: Deming on Baldrige

I have looked in on this discussion with interest. Reading the latest
revision of the Baldrige criteria, I would agree with those who
observe that over the years the criteria have moved in a direction of
greater conformity with the Deming philosophy.

This is not to say that Dr. Deming's principle objection to the
Baldrige award has been satisfied; namely, that the award articulated
no philosophy of management and hence would lead some to copy others
without understanding. He gave a qualified acknowledgement of the
award's contribution.

I would be glad to email transcripts of volumes 22 and 23 of The
Deming Library to those of you who request to read them. These videos
consist of a conversation between Dr. Deming and Curt Reimann in which
Deming seems to beat up the generous-spirited and patient
administrator of the award who was trying to nurture an initiative
following the Deming Prize example, as Frank Voehl has pointed out.
The second video in the set illustrates the surprising congruence
between the Baldrige criteria and the 14 Points (Bill Scherkenbach's
contribution).

For the cost of shipping and return, we will lend these tapes to DEN
members.
