I would like to thank Frank for his input on the Baldridge/Deming Prize
comparisons. If we look INSIDE the awards, at the parts, there are many
similarities between the Baldridge Award and the Deming Prize.
But if we follow the SoPK, we will see that we must begin our examination
with understanding the systems that we are looking at, not the parts, and
that begins with understanding the aim of the system, as WED clearly pointed
out. And it is here, in the AIM, that the differences between the Baldridge
Award and the Deming Prize appear. The Baldridge has a "winner," and that
means losers, and that means competition. The Deming prize has a
"progression" up the scale with as many "recognitions" as there are those who
reach the various levels.
Now, I agree that as a source of potential "tools" the Baldridge
points/guides can serve a useful purpose for many organizations, just like so
many other sources of information and techniques about "how." But as a
"Prize," I still agree with WED's assessment of it as a "public relations"
effort and not system based (from a system perspective how do you single out
as an "example" a company practicing racial or ethnic, or sexual bias, or
increasing local unemployment, or harming the environment, or not, as WED
noted, working for the benefit of everyone, or....you get the picture).
Hard over? Nope. Just show me how the factors I note above, and related
elements, are addressed in the Baldridge, that the competition is gone and I
will be happy to say, "Baldridge, RAH!" Till then, well, I'll continue with,
"Baldridge? Why?"
