Dr. Noriaki Kano published a 1985 paper in which he compared the long term
performance of companies that won the deming prize to all Japanese
Manufacturing. This paper (in Japanese) showed that the Deming Prize
winners outperformed the total in several economic indicators over a ten
year period.
Dr. Sarvadan Soin in his 1992 book, "Total Quality Control Essentials: Key
Elements, Methodologies, and Managing for Success" (New York: McGraw-Hill)
extended the data to 1985. While there is fluctuation, the gap is generally
25 - 50% greater for the Deming Prize Winner Firms than for the All
Manufacturing Firms.
