John Dowd asked about Deming's Eight Wastes.

I don't know about Eight Wastes, but have heard about The Seven Wastes. 
However, not in connection with Deming.

The Seven Wastes (or MUDA) were developed by Ohno (Toyota's Chief
Engineer) to identify & summarise all the sources of waste in their
manufacturing operations.  You will see that they have equal application
in service industries.

The Wastes are:

The Waste of Overproduction
The Waste of Waiting
The Waste of Transporting
The Waste of Inappropriate Processing
The Waste of Unnecessary Inventory
The Waste of Unnecessary Motions
The Waste of Defects
