Incentives for TQM activities

 Dear Sir,

We are not for profit Dairy cooperative owned by farmers based in India. We are ISO 9002 and HACCP
certified organisation with Rs 370 crore turnover . We are producers of famed AMUL and SAGAR brand
of Dairy products. Two years back we had adopted TQM as one our strategic thrust areas. We hired one
the most reputed consultancy known for their TQM expertise. They trained our workforce to use various
practices and tools like SGA, Kaizen and Housekeeping. Consultant never suggested any incentive
structure to be adopted. On the other hand he suggested thatt to begin with accept any suggestion from
employee as kaizen and give him a Gift. Gifts are
like Soaps, crockery, pens etc. · Now after two years people are reporting their routine work as Kaizen.
· Without gift no one does a kaizen. · Whole scheme is gift driven. · Numbers of good ideas are very few.
 · Officer cadre has simply stopped doing kaizens. They say that they feel that its part of their duty to
make improvements. ( Management insists that they must fill the form) · We fear that it may happen that
in future workforce may want an incentive for every damn thing.
Even the motivation for workforce to be part of SGA and other problem solving activities is coming down.
What kind of incentives we should provide. We are not for profit firm so we can not go for cash or profit
sharing. We should go for team-based incentives or individual incentives. Same time we don't want to
develop a gift driven TQM movement. What steps we should take to salvage the situation.
What kind of incentives will help strengthening the cause of continuoes improvement. If you need more info
on HR systems and org policies I will be happy to provide that. Your suggestions will help us perform better.
Thanking you
With warm regards
