Mr Geoff Ward took his manufacturing facility to best practice without
incentives. He then changed companies and repeated the success. He
recently joined another company and is in the process of turning it around
without the use of incentives.
We seem to assume that incentives are necessary, but there are examples
where best practice has been achieved without them.
Ought we not ask ourselves :
"What value statements are made when we assume that people NEED incentives",
or perhaps
"Why do my people seem to need incentives, when people in other operations
do not?"
Geoff Ward focussed on removing the barriers to intrinsic motivation, and
creating an environment where people could take pride and joy in work,
exactly as Deming suggested.
I have a paper Geoff wrote for a seminar series in the USA. If you would
like a copy, drop me a line.
Cheerio!
