Del Nelson had it right on. I think Dr. Deming had no problem with a
directional goal but stated as pure numbers, at least in my understanding, he
had a real problem with. One might suppose that if they had had some
historical data to support their meanliness "goals" he might have not been so
hard over on the subject. However most folks just create a number for some
one else and call it a goal.
As Del Nelson and every one else has pointed out so many time Dr. Deming
when he would see goals to be attained he would simply ask "by what method".
At that point in time the discussion usually ended. Not from Dr. Deming but
those around him who tried to descibe how they had come up with the goal and
their precieved method of attaining it.
