STUDENT REQUEST: elimination of inspectors and migration toward self-inspection

What are the lessons learned, if any, from inspectors to the migration to self-inspection by manufacturing and assembly operators?  Is, or was this trend supported by product audits.  How does a company know what their out going quality level is if there is no outgoing inspection activity?
