Well, less is more?
I don't have a PhD, so I cannot of real help. But isn't Ph stands for
'philosophy'? And I remembered WED advised the student to get the degree
first and later learning by yourself. So how about some metaphors or
'gossip test'( As per F. Crick's What Mad Pursuit)for your reference.

PhD is a game. As long as the school buys-in that any subjects to
'verify' or 'extend' many statements in Out of the Crisis ( for example,
the 'quality chain reaction'in chapter one, the 'history' of Japanese
transformation in the appendix, or the old Japanese poem for the quality
triangle or more...)or The New Economics( WED quoted his friends'
comments on six sigma, the 'loss functions'...) is O. K.

Want some other predictions? Please see last chapter of J. M. Juran's A
History of Managing for Quality.
