Deming may not have overtly said it ... I hope someone else can put us
straight.
There is a game called snooker. You play it on a 'table'. Looks like a pool
table. You use similar equipment, like cues and heavy
'don't-drop-them-on-your-feet' balls.
Provided your opponent has not just played a foul, the maximum you can score
scored at your turn at the table is 147 points by potting the reds and the
'colours' in optimal sequence. To score 147 at all you have to be highly
skilled. Given that the right conditions and opportunity exist, is it
possible to score 147 every time you visit the table? What is the
probability that you will do so? Pretty low - even if you are the 'best' in
the world. Whatever that means.
To me 'Zero defects' and 'do-it-right-first-time' may apply to the game. But
which bit?
Laying the table out?
Putting the balls in just the right place before you whack them with the cue
ball?
Following the rules?
Or actually playing the game?
Will you score 147?
What is the probability that you will ever get it right? Or wrong?
Does any part of your business rely on ANYONE getting 147 at anytime,
anywhere in your business?
What would be the consequences if they don't?
Where are your real risks? (in the sense of probability x consequence)
What plans do you have in place to minimise or mitigate?
These are not rhetorical.
They are intended to make you think for yourself.
Sincere Regards
Morris
