Weakest Link
HI All,
Yesterday I was lounging around watching the cricket on TV (England Vs West
Indies, last test of five, England come out 3:1 winners and beat the West
Indies for the first time in a five test series for over 30 years). Still
lounging after the cricket had finished (I had done an Olympic distance
triathalon on Sun and was a bit "cream-crackered"). I had the dubious
pleasure of seeing a quiz show called "The Weakest Link". The show was
described as a quiz in which the contestants have to work as a team, but
only one of them will take anything away - all the rest leave empty handed.
Nothing to do with working as a team and all to do with attribution of
blame. After each round the contestants get to vote on who "The weakest
link" is and they are kicked off the show!. Whilst they are making up
their (individual) minds a dismembered voice informs the audience who
"statistically" the weakest link is - based on the last round and how many
questins they got right or wrong. How much money they banked and how much
they lost etc. After a bit of jotting down of scores etc, surprise
surprise they were all the same!
Looked very much to me as a great example of performance related pay,
ranking, employee of the month (voted on by fellow employees) etc and how
they are really a load of tosh, despite the knowing voice in the back
ground saying, "In this round Roger was the weakest link, getting 3 out of
7 questions wrong and banking no money ... but will the others realise?"
Interestingly in one round they voted off the person who had banked the
most money and got the most questions right, because he hesitated and would
be a liability later...
