This was a good post.  I'd add:

And how do control charts aid the aim of reducing variation?

Requisite action for reducing variation is different depending on the type of 
variation being reduced.  The control charting is a simple but economically 
powerful tool to help us distinguish between the two types of variation 
(common cause/systemic variation vs. special cause/assignable variation).
