In Value Based Six Sigma, the way we do it at ITT, it does include
Psychology, Appreciation of the System, Understanding of Variation, and a
Theory of Knowledge. All Black Belts and their Champions are trained not
only in statistics, but in Improving Leadership Effectiveness (which
includes large doses of Argyris' "Double Loop Learning", Organizational
Learning tools like the ladder of inference, and the left hand column,
learning cycle checks, Psychological models of leadership styles, style
switching, etc. and learn IN TEAMS, simulating real world product
development, lean production, and organizational behavior scenarios. I have
performed diagnostics at six sites with three or four black belts on each
team, teaching as we go, the values we espouse, looking for projects which
will not only increase economic value added and spur growth, but make more
successful teams and leaders who do, indeed, come to express joy in their
work.
