Regarding methods and approaches for improving quality of education, the
American Society for Quality (ASQ) supports an initiative referred to as
Koalaty Kid. The materials used were developed by PQ Systems of Dayton, Ohio
and are the educational version of their Total Quality Transformation (TQT)
process. TQT integrates Dr. Deming's concept of profound knowledge into what
they refer to as foundation principles (Customers, Systems, Variation,
Knowledge, Planned Change and People). Under the planned change module,
process alternatives are standardization, improvement and re-design.
The Indianapolis Section of ASQ is in the fourth year of a partnership with
an elementary school who has gotten such good results with Koalaty Kid, that
they decided this year to apply/adopt the process school wide.
I think the Koalaty Kid model provides a good opportunity for anyone to get
involved in helping schools to learn and apply the quality principles,
methods and tools. More information is available at our section website at:
www.indyasq.org and at ASQ: www.asq.org.
