I'm not sure you can define criticism without also defining praise, any more
then you can understand evil without first knowing what is good.
A common definition is that criticism almost always produces the desired
result, while praise very rarely does.
A number of years back, there was a study done regarding apppraisals of
"Young Bucks" versus "Experienced Hands". The researcher found that
"Yound Bucks" did better than expected on appraisals, while "Experienced
Hands" did not always perform up to expectations.
We can illustrate this with a pair of dice as follows:
-High numbers are better - If one rolls an 11 or twelve, they certainly
deserve to be praised.
-Low numbers are worse- If one rolls a 2 or 3, they deserve to be criticized.
-Try this with a pair of dice. You will find that people who are criticized
will
almost invariably do better on the next roll of the dice, but people who
are praised will usually do worse.
