Mr. Hollingworth has got it right.
This was written up somewhere (I think Huff's book, "How to lie with
Statistics" but I don't have it in front of me) as the 'Mashed Potato
Fallacy'. All axe murders ate mashed potatoes, therefore eating mashed
potatoes causes one to be an axe murderer....
The fallacy has a Latin name as well, "Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc" (after
this, therefore because of this...).
Aristotle identified it as the 'fallacy of false cause' over two thousand
years ago.
How do you define progress?
