Re: Criticism

If ever a word begged for an operational definition, this is it. I have to
agree with Myron that good critics can be a very effective source of
learning. A good critic will offer specific feedback grounded in specific
observations. Someone who reads a document I write and merely says it
stinks is not a critic, but a bully. On the other hand, someone who
carefully reads it, asks specific questions, and offers specific suggestions
for improvements not only flatters me (by admitting my effort is worthy of
her/his careful attention), but also provides me with an opportunity to
learn how to better communicate. Likewise, someone who disagrees with me,
and cites specific evidence, offers me the opportunity to examine my
assumptions, logic, etc. Bullies should be ignored. Critics should be
thanked, and hopefully engaged in dialogue.
