Beat them

Some usual phrases reveal the subconscient as well as the Freud's method. A
terrible phrase, which Deming never said, is ''Beat the competition''.
The original meaning of ''beating'' is ''striking''. When you say (for
example) that Mr GWB has beaten his competitor Mr ALG, you just mean that
the result of the competition is in favor of Mr GWB. But your subconscient
may carry the picture of Mr GWB striking Mr ALG with a birch.
The same phrase is valid in French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.
The Romans said already: ''Vae victis'' (Jim, please, can you translate?).
Best wishes,
Jean-Marie Gogue
