In 1972, Dr. Deming wrote in The American Statistician: _It seems to me that
the prime requirement for a teacher is to possess some knowledge to teach.
He who does no research possesses no knowledge and has nothing to teach. . .
The student is at a disadvantage when asked to evaluate his teacher. On what
basis? Luster of personality? Knowledge of the subject? Content of the
course? . . .The only suitable judge of a teacher's knowledge are his peers.
The only objective criterion is research worthy of publication--measured on
some scale of contribution to knowledge, not by numbers of papers
(published)._(Deming, The American Statistician, Vol. 26 No. 1, February
1972).
Dr. Deming's words speak volumes about his opinion on this subject. Myron
Tribus wrote about this in : _Deming: The Way We Knew Him_ (Chapter
Three, pp. 25-33).
