I am reminded of the interview Deming once did where the interviewer (I
think it was for the NY Times or some equally prestigious publication) said
to him provocatively, 'So you de-emphasize profit?'

"Profit!", he exploded, "I don't see an American businessman who gives a
hoot about profit!"

Certainly Deming was aware of and cared about stockholders.  Please don't
forget that the title of his first book on the subject (published by MIT
before Out Of the Crisi) is  "Quality, Productivity and Competitive
Position".
