Reference to W. Edwards Deming:



Most journalistic style-books (Washington Post, AP, New York Times) suggest 
using the full name in an initial reference, then only repeating the surname 
in further references. Deming does not depersonalise the man. It only makes 
for more lucid and succinct writing.
       WED is fine, in this context, but is not only a commonly used 
abbreviation for a mid-week day, but was also the initials for the late 
Walter Elias Disney. WED was used as a code word, in years past, to refer to 
the covert research and development department within the Walt Disney 
Corporation structure, much as 'Skunk Works' was used by Lockheed Aircraft 
for the same purpose......
