Re: Dr. Deming and the Baldrige Award

Dr.Deming was of two minds about the Deming Prize. He was proud that
it was named after him but he had misgivings. Since the Deming prize
does not organize a competition (there is no limit on the number of
winners) he did not feel as strongly about it as he did the Baldrige
which has a limited number of winners and therefore, a number of
losers.
Incidentally, the Deming Prize came into being when Dr. Deming
refused to accept the royalties that had accrued from the sale of a
translation of his lectures in Japan. He told them to keep the money
and establish a prize.
