RE: Quality tool training a mistake
I have to say I disagree with John Seddon. Tools are a means for employees
to own their job, to illustrate and comprehend their own performance,
improvements or otherwise, and to take responsibility within the system.
To train people in tools and techniques cannot be a mistake; however those
already in possession of such skills and knowledge need to provide training
in what is appropriate, and in discussion with employees who will use such.
The only downer that I have seen is that sometimes managers are loath to
support and allow time for employees to experiment with, and to practice the
very tools and techniques that they have promoted (though not trained
themselves). This leads only to frustration and resentment, rather than
useful data, and dialogue with management towards improvement.
The system should not be written in stone, and only those working within the
system may readily recognise room for improvement. Tools and techniques
help in that recognition, within sensible parameters (the job still has to
get done).
