Deming based his concept of theory of knowledge on the work of Clarence
Irving Lewis's book "Mind and the World Order: Outline of a Theory of
Knowledge" (ISBN 0-486-20359-X). This book deals with a branch of
philosophy called "epistemology". The book is hard to read to the point
that Deming suggested that one begin with chapter V, "The Knowledge of
Objects."

From this work, Deming derived the concept of Operational definition, the
concept that management is prediction, and the concept that experience
without theory teaches us nothing. These concepts are the practical
applications of Lewis's theories. Apparently, Deming was introduced to
Lewis's ideas by Dr. Shewhart.
