David makes a great point, but we must remember that the economy
(free-market or controlled) depends on willing buyers seeking out
even-more-willing sellers. The result, when less than ideal from an
ethical standpoint, is not the fault of the process (the "economy"), but
the willingness of too many participants to try to make a buck, no
matter the ultimate cost.

As my English grandmother used to say, "Penny-wise and pound-foolish" -
too often the saving results in tragedy and suffering, or at the least,
less-than-ideal outcomes.

It's no wonder we rely so much on certificates of conformance.
