I completely agree with Martin. Indeed, I thought it was actually Dr
Deming himself who said something like, "You need to start from where
people are, not where you think they ought to be."
However, over the years I've read thousands of postings on the DEN
advocating an approach along the lines "My management philosophy is
better than yours".
This approach may be intellectually appealing, but, in the real world,
it just doesn't work.
My own view, for what it's worth, is that it's best to avoid what I call
the "Don't call my baby ugly" syndrome. If you can be relevant to
people in their own terms, I believe you can thereby earn the right to
influence their management philosophy. In my view, anything else is
just intellectual arrogance.
Phew!! Excuse me for getting this off my chest, but I've harboured this
view in private for over 10 years, so it's good to be able come out in
the open, so to speak.
