While certainly agreeing with all you said, you might be interested to know
that in Thailand years ago I learned that it was considered proper to
loudly call a baby ugly (phonetically "key gle-at" or how ugly) to avoid
bringing down the gods' displeasure on any pretty child. To comment on a
baby's loveliness was extremely poor form, in fact.  A warm smile went with
the phrase, of course.

Just another example of the need you stressed "...to start from where
people are, not where you think they ought to be."
