Re: Moderation, Deming Management Philosophy, Resistance to Change
Dear DENizens,
Kromkowski@aol.com wrote among 'insightful' points and I think this is an
opportunity for us to think about 'organizations' issues.
quotes:'What exacting is the "DEN" anyway? Is it incorporated, is it a front for
something else, is it a nonprofit or a for profit entity? Does "the DEN" =Jim or
does "the DEN" = everyone who participates, or is "the DEN" something totally
different? Total transparency please? ' end of quotation.
First, one question for John, that is, legalwise, who own DEN? This is just a
curious question. by the philosophy of searching engine Google, DEN is a
'public' asset?
Dr. Deming maintained his own networks of friends worldwide through 'the
secretary' and proposed his 'organization' for improvement of quality and
productivity in chapter 16 of Out of the Crisis. I think he did not cover the
organization like DEN and other transformation groups but I also think the ways
of his doing 'business' and the ways he left his 'legacies' might be models for
our thinking.
We all know people in worldwide Deming community are trying various
organizations. But DEN is a very interesting case.
I think this might be a very nice case for the organizations design. I think it
is worthwhile putting our thinking in it. There are some interesting proposals
from R. Ackoff( for example, Democratic Corporate among others) and others like
Chaordic (see, Birth of the chaordic age, by Dee Hock). How to make DEN a
'living' and 'healing' organization, this is really challenging and we are part
of it.
I used to think what is my 'obligations' for DEN. My conclusion was to contribute
more 'words', for the time being, at least. I 'encouraged' Jim as a
servant-leader but I think this might be out of the reality context, I don't
know. As per the spirit of Dr. Deming's Professional Codes for Statistical
Consulants, we might think seriously about our roles and practices.
This might be one of fundamental questions for 'us'.
