Re.: Moderation
Oh dear, he's done it again (J D Kromkowski). He's made us lots us of cross,
and to what purpose?
Jim always reminds us of the multi-national and cross-cultural nature of
DENizens. We must be careful of the words we use and the way we use them so
that we do not upset people. But I have to say that Mr Kromkowski poses yet
again as the cool, objective purveyor of fact while managing to strike the most
abrasive and aggressive pose of any contributor to the DEN that I can remember.
For example, he refers to "Jim's desire to control." What tosh! (English word
- hope it doesn't have unintended meanings in any other language). JDK really
needs to get to grips with the precision of his language in the way that he
frequently urges on others. What is his evidence for "Jim's desire to control"?
I see none - only a man who, presumably, needs to earn a living but who gives up
a lot of his time to a voluntary activity through devotion to an idea. A man
whose dedication extends (if my memory of 3 - 4 years reading of the DEN is
correct) to continuing to moderate while snowed up, in bed sick, without power
supplies, on the road, in harsh foreign lands (including this one) and so on and
so on.
Like some other contributors, I also doubt whether moderation is inspection. Is
it not the something else that others have suggested e.g. more analogous to
editing? Or, for example, I have a letter (mail) box in my front door at home.
Anyone can shove anything through it - personal mail, junk mail, newspapers,
magazines, notes from my neighbours, bills from my window cleaner, vegetable
matter, dog faeces I would rather have someone intercept the dog faeces before
it comes through the door.
Also like some others, I have used unmoderated forums. One, ostensibly on
British local government, was subjected to the perennial ranting of conspiracy
theorists about masonic control of the world. Give me moderation any time. The
solution for JDK is obvious - set up your own web-based forum and see who will
follow. For me, I'll stick with Uncle Jim.
