CRISIS IN JAPAN--A SECOND NOTE ON LEADERSHIP
Dear Denizens,
My Concise Oxford Dictionary reads 'crisis' first as 'turning-point,
esp. of disease;...'
This might be Dr. Deming's choice for renaming of his masterpiece. One
of Japanese diseases is their 'competitions in schools for 'better
performance and ranking' or 'benching marking all the life'. But this is
not the theme of this mail.
If possible, I should write more about my 'poor' knowledge about the
so-called crisis in Japan. (Remember, DEN is free.)
I mentioned many people learned a lot from our Japan friends, such as
Dr. Tribus, Dr. Deming. When we are doing business in Asia Pacific, we
used to 'classify' with ' Japan and OTJ(other than Japan)'.
So, Japan might be a very nice place of 'education' for most people,
particular the leaders.
Smart companies already make this into the journey of their top
executives.
I knew the chairman of DuPont when he was the chairman of Asia Pacific
about 9 years ago. I knew his mission.
I love the story of Philips Taiwan to win the Deming Prize. The starting
point is the chairman of Philips back 1987 was rotated in Japan before
hence proposed Philips Taiwan to go for 'it'.
Well, both companies are big brothers with deep pockets (once, at
least). How about organizational learning stories? If you study the
story of HP, TI, you might notice how Japanese feedback their knowledge
to headquarters and system companies of their 'TQC'.
For the rest of us , we can only dreaming in armchairs? Well, not bad,
we can play some Japanese 'games' with the popular translation like 'All
your base belongs to me'. ( I forgot the LA Times link about it.)
