Since this discussion has grown to include professional service, I would
recommend looking at Tom Peters' website at http://www.tompeters.com.  There
are some interesting customer service ideas there, from the perspective of
the professional service firm / white collar worker.  These ideas include
the "brand yourself" movement.  

I have found that I have been practicing many of his principles without
realizing it.
