Assuming you are taking a graduate level Statistics course, you will learn
that
the Expected Value of a ANY distribution shares this property, that is, the
first moment of the distribution is the expected value, and the second moment
is
the variation. For a normal distribution these are the mean and sigma squared,
for the Poisson, mean and variation are identical, etc.
