RE: The rationale for substantive knowledge of underlying process

For several years, I have been a judge at the Regional Science Fair here
in NM. I am continually amazed at the things kids in grammar and middle
schools are learning (and in some cases, learning in spite of
disinterested teachers).  Some really sophisticated graphs are routinely
turned out by kids in their pre-teens.
