Myron:
Can you show any maps Dr. Deming drew to depict processes or systems as a
complex network of coordinated commitments? I've seen a good deal of work
that Dr. Deming, but certainly not as much as you. Look at the vast majority
of "process" or "system" maps that are done - they are look somewhat similar.
They are great depictions of the flow of things and data. People do not
appear in the maps as people coordinating action by taking the fundamental
speech acts that we use to make action happen: request, delcare, promise.
These distinctions of speech act theory or coordination theory do not appear
in any of the writing I have seen submited by Dr. Deming or any of the people
who were close to Dr. Deming. Dr. Deming did give us the SoPK with which to
see the usefulness of these speech act theory distinctions.
I believe part of why Dr. Deming's philosophy of management has not been as
useful in terms of actually transforming our world of work and other stuff.
