System of Profound Knowledge

How can it be established that a person has acquired profound knowledge--or 
that a person is capable of making use of profound knowledge? Can profound 
knowledge be easily transferred, or does it apply to knowledge and 
understanding of specific situations in certain work groups, enterprises, 
or industries?

I have my own ideas on the subject and would be very interested in those of 
list members.
