Feeding People

Hello Group:

Many thanks to Steve Hillmer for that excellent and thought provoking post.
About 25 years ago there was a series of programs on PBS titled the Assent
of Man. This was a monumnetal work that spanned the history of mankind and
traced the history and development of mankind. At the end of the series
Bronowski (the creator and narator of the series) was standing in front of
a crashed airplane in the African bush country. He explained that when
they were doing the shooting for the very first episode the airplane had
crashed. Fortunately no one was injured and they were able to proceed with
the project. But, Bronowske said that here I was just beginning this hugh
project and already a major accident. We went forward and now here we are
back at the beginning to do the final episode. The photographer that had
been in the crash during the first episode was still with us and the finale
program once again called for arial photography.

Brownowski said that he was concerned for the man so he went to him and
inquired as to how he felt about once again going up in a light airplane
and making the necessary shots. The man replied that while he would be
concerned about doing this it was his job, it was what he did and that he
had on hesitation about doing the necessary work. Bronowski said that he
had been looking for a way to sum up the series and come to some conclusion
regarding what sets mankind apart. He said that he had found that in the
courage of the photographer, and that is that mankind is constantly moving
forward. There are times that we are afraid, there are times that we
backslide, but we seem to have an ability to pick ourselves up and
continually move the process forward.

We are now moving forward at an excellerated pace thanks to enhanced
communications and transportation systems. What are we moving toward?
