LEADING AND MANAGING IN THE NEW ECONOMY

With share prices slumping, dotcom disillusionment has set in. Yet the
experience of
the new economy offers important lessons - it's just that until now we have
been
looking in the wrong places. Established businesses are taking the best
technology
and practice made possible by the new economy and using it to transform their
businesses.

DEFENDER, DEVELOPER or CREATOR?

Is your organisation:
* A Defender - where the status quo predominates?
* A Developer - aware of the need to change and the power of partnership?
* Or a Creator - able to flex and innovate to meet the challenges of the new
economy?

To become and remain successful in the new economy requires a major shift
in the
way organisations are led and managed. Leaders will have to take on new
competencies while still retaining those they bring with them. Success will
come from
managing the accompanying tensions and paradoxes by engaging new business
models. The Creator organisations show how this can be done, but there is
no simple
'one size fits all' approach to change. Understanding whether your
organisation is a
Defender, Developer or Creator is a first step to securing enduring success
in the new
economy.

This is the conclusion of Leading and Managing in the New Economy, a new
research report from the Centre for Tomorrow's Company. The survey covered
over
thirty organisations, including Vodafone, BT, SAP, Unipart, First Direct,
Oracle and
thinknatural.com.

In the first half of this workshop, Chris Gamblin, the author of the
report, will
present its key findings and lead group discussion.

LEADING AND MANAGING IN REAL-TIME

In the second half of the workshop, Andy Harmon, Tony Page and members of the
New Intermediaries will present a forum theatre-based case study of the
problems
and dilemmas of leadership in a fictitious railway infrastructure organisation.

In forum theatre, spectators are encouraged to respond actively to the drama,
identifying what is or is not working, entering into dialogue with the
protagonists and
becoming actors themselves to play out alternative courses of action.

Accompanying the workshop there will be an exhibition of recent paintings and
drawings by Julian Burton on the theme of leadership.
