The adoption of the Turnbull report puts risk management high on the
organisational agenda. Organisations, whether in the public or private
sector, are
recognising the need for higher standards of corporate governance and a more
effective approach to risk management.
In Antelope's experience of risk management at a business or enterprise
level the
problem lies not in the risk, but in the response. Too often the response
is neither
timely nor concerted. Too often the risk sows seeds of discord and
division. But the
point of enterprise risk management is to treat the enterprise as a
cohesive system, not
as a collection of functions or processes.
Finding robust stories
The way we understand change is through narrative stories. We use
narrative to
track changes in circumstance and to understand the significance of the
changes as
they apply to us. Yet often we are ambivalent about surfacing and telling
these stories
of how things might play out and how they might be. On the one hand, we feel
uncomfortable, at risk, even guilty in thinking about things that might
upset the status
quo. On the other hand, we find stories hugely engaging and energising.
Similarly, when an organisation is considering its future path. If the
stories being told
are irrelevant to stakeholders' needs, invoking a 'So what?' response, the
organisation
is unlikely to succeed in its plans. When people find the story of a
proposed response
to a risk convincing, then it is likely to be robust. For it to be
convincing, it must
integrate and energise the separate stories of the stakeholders concerned.
If people
remain cynical, we know it won't fly.
In this workshop we will find, tell and retell some organisational stories.
In the first
half, we will briefly contrast the available approaches to enterprise risk
management. Then, based on an enterprise scenario, we will use tools and
templates to draw out the current situation and its risks. In the second
half, we will
use a variety of techniques to find robust and convincing stories of risk
responses.
