TRIZ AND THE FOUR
PRONGS OF QUALITY
Exploring inventive problem solving with Darrell Mann
Kirkdale Conference Centre*

Dr W Edwards Deming described innovation of product and service and innovation of process as the two most important activities for a sustainable business. Generally speaking, organisations are not very good at either.
According to the Russian theory of inventive problem solving, TRIZ: -
·	the world's patents have come from just 40 inventive principles
·	exactly the same principles apply when solving non-technical problems
·	the strongest solutions emerge when we don't accept compromises and trade-offs (usually we do)
·	the strongest solutions emerge when we make best use of available resources (usually we don't)
·	technology evolution trends are highly predictable
TRIZ is an extremely potent systematic innovation tool, already being used to powerful effect by companies like Lockheed-Martin, Rolls-Royce, Unilever, Dow Chemical, 3M, Samsung, LG Electronics, Philips and Ford. The method is beginning to be taught at a number of leading edge educational establishments for both technical and business applications, and in a very short space of time has become a 'core competence' method at several companies.
TRIZ is the result of the largest study of human creativity ever conducted. Although it is a method with significant depth, the session will enable attendees to leave with both an appreciation of the method and a working knowledge of some of the basic tools.
The interactive session will come crammed full of real case study examples, based on a course recently presented at the London Business School.
Darrell Mann
Darrell Mann will run the session. Darrell is one of the West's leading TRIZ educators, users and developers. He works with a number of companies either teaching or problem solving using TRIZ, he uses TRIZ to develop and licence novel product innovations, and is a founder member of the European TRIZ Association, an organisation aiming to ensure the successful future evolution of the method. He is the author of over 80 papers, patents and patent applications based on TRIZ, and is a regular contributor to the on-line TRIZ Journal.
