One must be amused, astounded, fascinated, befuddled and chagrined by Enron.
It will go down as a classic.
There are apparently more to this than meets the eye, even if looking in all
directions. Enron is an example of the drive to deregulation begun in the
early 90's (and perhaps earlier). Enron became enamored of games theory and
its application to real world opportunities in which they (Enron) might work
to gain complete market share without the burden of competition.
While appearing to be hard at work buying gas and energy on the futures
market, which essentially failed as many of the recent posts have pointed
out, Enron was in a controlling position in the western power grid, a
monopoly position sans regulatory control.
One minor problem...price control in California. You can't put your eggs,
rotten though they may be, all in one basket. That basket was deregulation.
You have to give them (Enron) credit; they did a stinking job very well, and
now the question remains. Was deregulation force-fed by Enron political
contributions long ago? Was deregulation really the boon it was made out to
be?
A real classic of a class-less act.
