Den:
Mr. Crow's contribution is an understandable perspective but using his
operational defintions for "system and process" to describe a mechnical
apparatus and how it creates power to do something else is one thing but does
this also mean these translate into a management system in the same way? My
computer and how it processes data to make life easier (quality)than doing it
another way is like his example. But is my computer actually a management
system? Remember Deming said, "Management in any form is prediction,"
according to Deming? Therefore the system used to generate a prediction is a
management prediction system. Based upon what is known and what one thinks
will occur it predict an outcome. I think I hear him saying, "More gadgets,
Doing things faster? Yeah? Think that'll do it!"
Again Deming stated, "To optimize a system requires first manage understand
what a system is?" (Deming audio) And so again I ask what is a managment
system? What I have observed is how we use this operational term to mean many
things. Again "Appreciation of a System" suggests exactly what? Using the
adjective "management" restricts its use. It certian is not my computer
system. What does a management system look like? Certainly it has
characteristics we can create a preliminary budget around? After all we read
all the time there is a variation in management levels and responsiblites?
Then again we hear about Labor verses Management so I wonder does Labor
possess a management system?
Please do not think I am being cute here. I see a very serious problem with
the lack of care when using the word "system." I just acquired a spring water
bottling company and I am instituting Deming. We are dealing with
establishing his commom language top down and bottom up (P-14). I see how top
management doesn't realize they are hacks while proclaiming they aalready had
studied Deming while the willing workers are only growing more confused by
the way the word "system" is being used. Now please do not worry, in my
management system I induced this environment with the management aim to clear
away the clutter and its working. There are moments when each employee
appears to like they are students willing to learn what the other's job is
and try doing it because of how this relates to the management system.
