Dear Rip:

The notion of "continuous improvement, " of course, requires a continuum.  I
use Benjamin Bloom's cognitive taxonomy as the continuum.  Similar to the
taxonomy used for identifying simple to comlex animals, Bloom's taxonomy
identifies increasingly more difficult levels of thinking.  A student begins
with doing simple assignments  and progresses, hopefully, toward assignments
requiring increasing more complex thinking--especially problem solving.
