Deming, along with (if I remember correctly) Eugene Grant, Harold Dodge,
Holbrook Working and others both in Washington and at Stanford played a key
role in the design and implementation of the quality standards used widely
by industry in the war build-up. A special statistics committee was formed
under the guidance of Dodge.
Their work included a course in statistical quality control methods, but was
not restricted to that. The Z standards were widely used even after the war
and the American Society for Quality Control can be said to have arisen in
large part from these efforts.
